DIY Solar Projects You Can Do Today

Maybe you've already made some solar-powered improvements to your home -- or maybe this is the first time you've considered it. Either way, these projects are quick, easy and sure to make you feel like an eco-superstar.

There are plenty of reasons to go solar, but there are two that get most of the glory: Cutting down your energy bills and making a step in the right, eco-conscious direction.

Like anything there are plenty of ways to start, both big and small. You want options? You got them:

DIY Solar Idea #1: Build your own solar battery charger kit. For $60, you can get a kit to make your own solar charger that can charge not only batteries but cell phones, iPods and other small electronic devices. Feeling more ambitious? Build one from scratch.

DIY Solar Idea #2: Convert your clock to solar power. You'll need to measure your clock's power requirements, secure a solar cell and use some hot glue to connect it to the wires and click -- get the full instructions to get started!

DIY Solar Idea #3: A more low-tech option: Make a solar oven. Not only does it give you the chance to move summertime cooking outside (sans BBQ) but it's a great way to show off your eco-endeavors for neighbors. You'll need a pot, a plastic bag, one of those sun reflectors from your car and the directions on building an official solar cooker. Think it looks too wacky to display in the front yard? Bring it out back!
